The Mell Fells

Join us as we ease our way into our first Wainwright series hike of the year, on a fantastic day exploring some of the Lake District’s most rewarding yet often overlooked fells.

The Mell Fells  take in three wonderful summits – Great Mell Fell, Little Mell Fell and Gowbarrow Fell – each offering its own unique character and stunning views across the Northern Lakes.

Standing proudly in isolation, Great Mell Fell is one of the most distinctive hills in the Lake District. Its rounded shape and wooded lower slopes hide a surprisingly wild summit with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the surrounding fells.

We’ll then head for Little Mell Fell, a smaller but equally rewarding summit that provides some of the finest views of Ullswater and the Helvellyn range. Despite its modest height, many walkers consider it one of the best viewpoints in the area.

Our final fell of the day is the magnificent Gowbarrow Fell, perched high above Ullswater and famous for inspiring William Wordsworth’s poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. From the summit we’ll enjoy spectacular views over the lake, surrounding mountains and the beautiful countryside beyond.

Throughout the day we’ll follow a varied route of woodland paths, open fellside, grassy trails and quiet country lanes, providing a wonderful mix of scenery and terrain. Away from many of the busier Lake District hotspots, this walk offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the peace and beauty of the National Park whilst still experiencing some truly memorable viewpoints.

As always, you’ll be guided by a fully qualified Mountain Leader in a relaxed and friendly environment alongside other like-minded adventurers.
