“We don’t live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means, and that is what life is for”. George Mallory
You will be met at the airport and taken into the very centre off Marrakesh to your hotel, which is just off Djemma el Fna Square. Depending on what time you arrive, you can either settle in for the night or if you’ve arrived early, you can go for a stroll taking in the sights and sounds of the square and the souks.
After breakfast, we will be picked up and we’ll make our way to Imi Oughlad (1450m), a small village in the foothills of the Atlas mountains to start our adventure!
We’ll pass through the gorges of Tahaoute and Mouly Brahim, as well as the villages of Asni and Tahnawout.
Here we’ll be greeted by our guides and muleteers with a cup of Moroccan tea, before loading our luggage and embarking on our first day’s hike, stopping to have lunch at Tizi N’tacht (2000m) and taking in the stunning views of the Azzaden Valley.
After a long lunch break, which will be the normal practice on most days, we’ll continue to our first day’s destination … the Berber village of Tiziane (1750m)
After easing into our adventure yesterday, today we’ll be hiking a little further as we gradually increase each day’s mileage and acclimatise to the altitude.
Heading southwesterly, we continue following the Azzaden valley gradually gaining elevation, passing the Berber village of Tizi Zougouart and taking in views of Takhrkhourt Forest, the biggest in Toubkal National Park.
We stop for lunch at Islan, at the head of the pass, before dropping down into T’kent valley to the picturesque Berber village of Tizgui, with it’s watermills and beautiful architecture, where we will spend the night.
After breakfast we leave Tizgui and the terraced fields of the valley and steadily climb north along the the pass of Tizi Tougdal, possibly stopping for lunch at 2800m and enjoying the stunning view over the valley and the peaks to the west of Toubkal.
Then we descend to the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) where, if we haven’t done so already, we can enjoy lunch next to the river and under the shade of one of the huge old walnut trees. Depending on the time of year we might find many walnuts on our adventures over the five days.
Finally we finish our very picturesque day back in the Azzaden valley, with the short ascent to our refuge at Tomsoult (2250m)
After a peaceful night’s sleep in our remote location, we now make our way on our penultimate day, before we take on Mt Toubkal tomorrow.
We soon pass the waterfall of Ighoulidn, before zig zagging our way to our lunch spot at Tizi N’Aguelzim (3650m) and taking in the impressive views of the High Atlas, including the beautiful Imlil valley and Toubkal.
After lunch we drop down for about an hour or so to Toubkal Refuge (3200m) where we will spend the night before waking up very early to take on the final ascent to the top of North Africa’s highest mountain, standing at 4167m tall!
Our final day of trekking in the High Atlas mountains, sees us wake early as we start in the dark with our head torches.
We make the short ascent of less than 3 miles upto the pinnacle of North Africa, where we will be greeted with possibly the best views of our lives. Above the clouds, the 360 degree views of the High Atlas mountains, the Sahara and Marrakesh will live forever in your memory… as well as the sense of achievement!
After spending a good half an hour or so feeling truly exhilarated, we will return to basecamp for brunch before setting off down the beautiful Imlil Valley to the large mountain town of Imlil and our accommodation at our authentic Berber guesthouse, passing many mountain huts on the way, giving us opportunity to buy freshly squeezed juices, Moroccan coffee and any Berber items of clothing that might take your fancy.
After our five day epic in the mountains, we now leave the foothills behind mid morning to arrive back at our hotel in Marrakesh.
After a couple of hours of free time, which can be spent just lazing around the hotel or going for a short stroll, we go to a small restaurant nearby, famed for it’s slow cooked lamb… Mechoui. Here we are treated to an amazing lunch, which is frequented by many locals.
Once rested and hopefully reenergised, we will be met by our fantastic personal guide Abdulhadi, who will spend the rest of the afternoon with us.
We’ll visit the Bahia Palace and Jemaa el-Fna Square and the Souks, discussing Moroccan culture, history, architecture, religion and customs, as well as taking in the sights and sounds of the city in general.
We then have a few hours to ourselves to spend a little time roaming around, before returning to our hotel.
An absolutely unforgettable day, finished off by dinner on the roof top of our hotel, over looking the square!
After breakfast, those of us with early flights say our goodbyes to one another and our fantastic Moroccan adventure. Those with later flights can leave their belongings and spend some more time exploring the city.
Transportation to the airport is provided for all, if needed.
“Then one day, when you least expect it, the great adventure finds you.” – Ewan McGregor
“This trip was definitely one of the highlights of the year for me, such an amazing experience and I can’t recommend it enough. The food was delicious in true Boot Up Adventures fashion! Such good memories I will treasure like sleeping under the stars at over 2200 meters! Eating lunch in the most beautiful places! Not forgetting drinking enough tea to sink a battle ship oh and don’t get me started on the Berber omelettes!! Just wow. But I think walking 50 odd miles through the Atlas Mountains and standing on the top of North Africa will be the best memory!
To top it off I was lucky enough to spend it with the best bunch of people! Thanks for the laughs!!”
“Well what an adventure we’ve had guys. First thanks to Nik for organising it and making it an adventure of a lifetime and just for being Nik… Love you mate. The unforgettable sights we’ve seen together, it’s been wonderful to share it with such an amazing group of friends. Going to miss not having the picnic with an awesome view each day with you guys. Thank you all”
