Sandstone Trail Walk – Voted by ITV viewers as one of Britain’s favourite walks.
Today, we’ll bag an ancient hill fort, rolling Countryside pastures and stunning panoramic views of the Cheshire plains following sandstone ridges, on this lovely walk.
The Sandstone Trail stretches for 34 miles along Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge and offers superb, unbroken, and often elevated walking across the still largely green and pleasant English county of Cheshire.
It runs from the ancient market town of Frodsham on the broad Mersey estuary, in the north, to Georgian Whitchurch in rural north Shropshire, in the south.
Starting at the Bickerton Poacher, the Sandstone Trail Walk incorporates part of Julia Bradbury’s route, which she advocates as ‘one of Britain’s best walks’.
We make our way to Bulkeley Hill, where we’ll see the old incline rail track used for the construction of the nearby reservoir and stopping to take in the great views, before continuing to Raw Head, the highest point on the Sandstone Trail.
Making our way through woodland and then onto countryside pastures we reach the Iron Age hill fort of Maiden Castle ,dating from around 600 BC, for a final chance to take in the outstanding views across the Dee Valley to the Welsh hills which make this such a popular walk, before descending back down and making our way back to one of the best Pubs in the area, the Bickerton Poacher.
