“Somewhere between the bottom of the climb and the summit is the answer to the mystery why we climb.”
Greg Child

Being the highest mountain in England, the summit of Scafell Pike (978m) in the Lake District should perhaps have a sign saying ‘Welcome to England’s rooftop’.

The challenge of climbing England’s highest peak creates an irresistible lure, drawing people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe.

The route from Borrowdale is a long, but less steep ascent of Scafell Pike. It is a full day’s walk, climbing up into the mountains alongside a river, it is certainly one of the most all encompassing routes up Scafell Pike.

For those who undertake the climb and reach the summit, the sense of achievement is well deserved, and the effort is rewarded with magnificent views encompassing all four nations of The British Isles.

In fact, the great man himself Alfred Wainwright reached a similar conclusion when he too looked out from the top of Scafell Pike and wondered why people were drawn to climbing mountains, saying:

“maybe they need to get out of their narrow groove and climb above it to see wider horizons and truer perspectives.”

The remote and scenic valley of Wasdale lies immediately to the west of Scafell Pike. At the heart of the Wasdale Valley lies Wast Water, England’s deepest lake at 258 feet deep.

To the north of Scafell Pike, the Borrowdale Valley runs from the market town of Keswick along the shores of Derwentwater, one of the prettiest of all the lakes, toward the small farming community of Seathwaite.
