“We don’t live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means, and that is what life is for”. George Mallory

We will land at Malaga Airport and take the coach to Granada. Once checked into our accommodation, we’ll get any last minute supplies (ie. camping gas) and enjoy the evening in the centre of the old part of Granada

After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Capileira (1435m), a charming whitewashed village, perched high in the Poqueira Valley, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to start our adventure!

As we begin the trail climbs gradually through stone terraces and alpine meadows to Refugio Poqueira, set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged peaks. Settle in for the evening at the mountain refuge, enjoying a warm meal and the company of fellow hikers as the sun fades over the valley.

Rise before dawn, we continue our steady ascent into the heart of the high Sierra and the summit of mainland Spain’s highest peak. The climb to Mulhacén’s 3,482 m crest is a challenging, the air grows thinner as you approach. Mulhacén, Spain’s highest mountain,  rewards us with sweeping views across Andalucía and, on clear days, all the way to the North African coast.

After taking photos, we make our way to Sieta Lagunas and find a quiet wild camping spot near the tranquil waters of Laguna Honderas. This high-altitude camp offers one of the most beautiful night skies in Spain — a place to rest after two very tough days.

The next morning, we’re rewarded with an easy 5.5 miles, descending along broad ridgelines and mountain pastures toward Trevélez — Spain’s highest village — where you’ll stay in a welcoming hostel. Celebrate with local jamón serrano, tapas and a well-earned rest.

Today’s route traverses rolling hills and ancient mule paths linking a chain of picturesque Alpujarran villages. Pass through orchards, streams, and chestnut groves before arriving in Pitres, a tranquil mountain community. Spend the evening at a local campsite, relaxing in the peaceful surroundings with views of Mulhacén glowing in the evening light.

A long but rewarding day which could possibly be ranked as the most picturesque on the tour.  Amazing trekking through the Sierra Nevada!

A gentler final stage leads us along scenic ridge paths and through oak woodlands as you loop back toward Capileira. We start with a short, sharp climb of of the village, before the descent offers splendid vistas of the Poqueira Gorge and the distant Mediterranean. Another short climb before returning to our starting point in Capileira to complete our circuit, and enjoy a farewell dinner at a local inn overlooking the valley.

After our five day epic in the mountains, we now leave the foothills behind early morning to arrive back at our hotel in Granada, for a well-deserved day of cultural immersion. Wander through the cobblestone alleys of the Albaicín, explore bustling plazas lined with tapas bars, and visit the world-renowned Alhambra — a masterpiece of Islamic art, gardens, and Moorish architecture, soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere before journey’s end.

After breakfast, those of us with early flights say our goodbyes to one another and our fantastic Spanish adventure. Those with later flights can leave their belongings and spend some more time exploring the city.
Transportation to the airport is provided for all.
