The Watkins and Bwlch Main Path
Cost: £35.00
The Watkin and Bwlch Main Path is possibly the best, most interesting, less well known and therefore less trodden of all the routes taken for Snowdon and is often described as the most scenic.
The Watkin Path was created by Sir Edward Watkin from an existing quarry path; the route was designed to allow walkers to reach the summit.
It was the first official footpath in Great Britain and therefore also the first ‘designated summit path’ made with the sole intention of walking to the summit. It was opened in 1892 by the then prime minister William Gladstone.
The path takes us through the beautiful woodland of Hafod y Llan and past the rapids and waterfalls of Afon Cwm Llan, making it the most interesting and spectacular start of any ascent of Snowdon. As the path weaves through Cwm Llan we can see impressive views of Snowdon’s South Ridge, Yr Aran and the south side of Y Lliwedd. As the path continues around Cwm Tregalan, Snowdon’s sharp pyramid becomes visible. Finally we begin the short but challenging section to the summit.
After taking in the breathtaking views from the roof top of Wales, we start our descent following the even less trodden Bwlch Main Path which is certainly one the many highlights of the route. Although this short section of ridge is not difficult, it is exposed with steep slopes either side.
Continuing our descent with sections that are almost off path, you start to forget that you’re on one of the busiest mountains in the UK.
Join us on this classic horseshoe walk, and without doubt, one of the least known!
