Chew Valley – Coombes Clough – An epic scramble day and a walk that has everything!

Come and join us in the Chew Valley situated on the Saddleworth Moors in the (Dark) Peak district for an action packed day of great walking, scrambling and beautiful vistas!

We start at Crowden, a small hamlet in the High Peak borough of Derbyshire, with a lovely section along the north side of Torside Reservoir.

Torside Reservoir is the largest of six man-made lakes in Longdendale. The reservoir was built between 1849 and 1864 as part of a chain of reservoirs providing drinking water for Manchester. Today, its banks provide walkers with a pleasant and easy circuit on sections of the Pennine Way and Trans Pennine Trail, which follows the old trackbed of the Woodhead railway line.

Coombes Clough Scramble offers one of the most exciting and scenic Grade 1–2 adventure routes in the Peak District, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who want to combine hands-on climbing with breathtaking natural beauty.

Overview

The Coombes Clough Scramble climbs from Crowden in the Longdendale Valley up toward Featherbed Moss, exploring a quieter, more rugged side of the Peak District that most visitors never see. Expect a 7-mile circular route featuring waterfall climbs, rocky streambeds, and superb moorland views.

Route Description

The adventure begins with a steep descent into Coombes Clough itself, where climbers enter a narrow ravine surrounded by high banks and mossy gritstone. The path then follows the stream upstream, requiring scramblers to clamber over boulders, slick rocks, and small waterfalls. Water levels and weather conditions can change the route’s challenge, with greasy stones adding to the excitement after rainfall.

As the climb continues, the scramble eases off and opens up toward Lad’s Leap and Featherbed Moss. This upper section rewards scramblers with expansive views over Longdendale and peaceful moorland terrain that feels far removed from the busier parts of the Peak District.

Difficulty and Duration

Rated between Grade 1 and 2, Coombes Clough suits those with some prior scrambling experience. The route includes short sections of steep rock and streambed navigation, making it a balanced step up from basic hillwalking. The full loop typically takes around 6-7 hours depending on pace and weather.

Highlights

  • Remote and quiet location away from popular tourist trails

  • Waterfall scrambles and gritstone climbs offering both challenge and fun

  • Scenic ridge views from Featherbed Moss and Laddow Rocks

  • Opportunity to spot moorland wildlife and enjoy uninterrupted Peak District

Ideal For

Coombes Clough is perfect for adventurous walkers and experienced Grade 1 scramblers seeking a challenge in an untouched setting. It’s less suited for beginners or families due to its steep, slippery sections and occasional exposure.

This exhilarating route combines the thrill of scrambling with the raw beauty of the Dark Peak, making Coombes Clough one of the region’s hidden gems for outdoor explorers.

A great day out, with picturesque views and a little scrambling in the mix!
